Grotesque Grotesk is a typeface inspired by the meanings between words. The typefaces of the 19th century were called grotesk for daring to get rid of serifs. A bold move, but one that dismisses the actual meaning of the word. Grotesque is deformation, abnormality, mutilation, peculiarity, distortion. Desensitised by traditional grotesque portrayals in painting, sculpture and film, the typeface is questioning what the word means now, in a digital environment.

 Project includes a 3D rendered animation, screenprinted posters and a printed publication documenting the process. 2021.
